Certain entities have been pestering me to throw my hat in the ring for the real-time portion of the festivities again this year, so here’s my proposal:

    NO MEDIA

For six sets of two or three players each. Sound, video, text… players shouldn’t be limited to any particular format.  Groupings will be decided randomly at the start of the performance. Each set will be a maximum of ten minutes long.

    Two simple rules:

    No media at the beginning.

Start with a blank slate. No preparation allowed. If you’re playing electronics, zero out those knobs, and nothing can be plugged in a the start. Computers, no pre-built Max patches, or anything of the sort. Samples should be cut in real time, playing a guitar? String it on stage.. Data-bending files? Open up that text editor on stage. All in true real time or as close to it as possible. You get the idea.

    No media at the end.

No recording or documentation. Un-patch that synth, unplug those pedals. Erase those files. No recording. Everything that happens exists only in during the performance. It happens and it’s gone.

    Any takers?

…it seems like the majority of the ‘performance’ will include folks setting up. sounds stressful. …the more I think about it… nothing might happen.

    COUNT ME IN :)

I should also add that due to other obligations on my part the plan would be for this to happen during Friday’s real time event at TriTriangle.

I’m going to set the cut-off at 18 total participants, for a maximum of six sets of three. I’ll keep updating this post with the current list of performers.

Evan and I are down to play a short bit. We’d prefer this be in addition to another more prepared set of performances, as is being discussed over yonder: http://working.gli.tc/forums/topic/realtime-event/

Ben – I don’t think participation in this prevents participation in any other portion of the fest. Also, keep in mind that participation in this is an individual thing, not a “band” performance, so it wouldn’t be Vaudeo Signal participating, but each of you individually, since the groupings will be chosen at random before the event. One of the goals of No Media being to mix things up a bit and get everyone out of their comfort zone.. Raw Real Time!

If using a computer? Does one need to create a new user as a “blank slate”? To me, that’s the closest thing to “zeroing” out a system like that… just a thought…
