    This is the schedule in the proposal Shawne Holloway wrote:

    [Fri] Dec 7: 9am – 12pm – intro & intermediate tutorials - .gif art + iOS & android art //  sound hack, spear & open source audio composing
    [Fri] Dec 7: 3pm  - 6pm –  studio time/tutorial overflow

    [Sat] Dec 8: 9am – 12pm – advanced tutorials - datamoshing /  vector synthesis w/pure data
    [Sat] Dec 8: 3pm – 12pm – studio time/tutorial overflow

    Also some other workshop ideas have come up:

    Shawne & jonCates have been talking about DI(rt)Y electronic sex toy hacking/building.

    Rick Silva has a rad idea about using Unity3D glitches & a screenrecording app as an animation rig.

    I have a (vague) idea about resurrecting a terminal-based artware workshop I did a few years ago (with jC @ r4wb1t5 in Mexico City). But maybe that could instead turn into a PD workshop chunk that involves piping raw data into PD, and using PD as a terminal app.

    “…the distinguished Marcel Duchamp. The presentation is structurally connectivist given its 4 directional presentation as a low laying sculpture. It is incredibly enjoyable. Plus the room is ringed with black haunting photograms called Angels by the fascinating Bruce Conner from 1973-75.”

    “yesterday was good. in prepping the connectivist software workshop again i started to feel like it was still too nebulous; so i scrapped it this time & refocused on a sort of demoscene workshop. the students said there’s already been some discussion & screening of demoscene stylez which is awesum. so we had like 1.5 hrs of watching classic demos, 1.5 hrs of python programming in NodeBox and 3 hrs of rocking out with fasttracker 2 in DosBox.

    & i guess next week there will be a demo deathmatch.”

    “I think that this conceptual edge is ever more important today after we have learned that both fundamentalist and modernist reductionist assumptions are not easily changed by mere postmodern negations. What seems to be needed globally are mutating conceptual models to think differently with; connectivist conceptual models that are never just the completed or inverted objectivity of the common conceptions. Does the technological into virtual dialogue you illustrate here offer such a modulating model? What I am asking is: do you think that technology and virtuality can allow us to think differently about our humanness? To think better? To become more human?” –  Joseph Nechvatal (2004)

    i’m guessing the datamosh workshop will involve avidemux? i’ve encountered some other glitchy behaviors in this app, but they may be unique to my workflow and/or even to the installation on my desktop machine. (cutting and pasting frames doesn’t work properly, for example, which makes traditional datamoshing more difficult.)

    i need to do some more experimenting, install avidemux on my laptop to try to reproduce some of these glitches, etc.

    Hey Stallio, whats the specs of your computer (OS etc) –

    AVIDEMUX is a bit unsturdy, thats why we like it : )

    i have a quad-core gateway running win7. my laptop is old as shit (still on XP) but i haven’t installed avidemux on it yet.

    [Sat] Dec 8: 9am – 12pm – advanced tutorials - datamoshing /  vector synthesis w/pure data

    I have no idea what vector synthesis is, but I’m intrigued.

    Also, you mentioned that there’s going to be a bit about using Pure data with Raw data. Is this of any use? http://www.hellocatfood.com/2012/09/23/create-jpgs-in-pure-data/

    @hellocatfood

    @everyone

    hi!

    “Vector Synthesis is a type of audio synthesis….[...]…..Vector synthesis provides movement in a sound by providing dynamic cross-fading between (usually) four sound sources. The four sound sources are conceptually arranged as the extreme points of X and Y axes, and typically labelled A, B, C and D. A given mix of the four sound sources can be represented by a single point in this ‘vector plane’. Movement of the point provides sonic interest and is the power of this technique. Mixing is frequently done using a joystick, although the point can be controlled using envelope generators or LFOs.”

    so, basically, we would be programing to create one unique sound out of four others. we would do this by running them all at the same time (with one duration) but on different *envelope generators (*different attack, sustain, decay)

    this idea came about because, I thought it might be healthy to jump away from visuals for a second and use this method to create some unique sounds that we could then glitch (somehow??? ideas??) and assemble in something like audacity???? or use them as presets in the unity workshop????

    You can tell I’m a visuals guy, I thought vector analysis was something to do with vector graphics!

    I’m still grasping the concept, but could the movement of the “points” be controlled by random data?

    im looking forward to sneaking away from our thread to learn something new and complicated :)

    use transcoded data for the control movements.

    is PD vector synthesis limited to just oscillators? if you could use waveforms then you could import sonified or other “glitch” sounds for the sound sources.  it would be even more interesting if the sound sources could loop, and more interesting still if the loops could be different lengths and/or could be hot-swapped in/out…  the piece would basically compose itself.

    i was able to get my ghost frames processes to run on my laptop, but not in version 2.6; i had to install 2.5.4. unfortunately this process currently begins with a microsoft-proprietary format (wtv) but we may be able to tweak it somehow to work with open formats to make it more shareable. i need to try working with other formats; i’m not sure yet what it is about wtv that makes the process work.

    i can elaborate more later; right now i really should be in bed…

    made a minor breakthrough with ghost frames: found some mp4s that the process works on, which means it’s not strictly tied to proprietary wtv files. but i’m not sure yet why it works for these particular mp4s and not others. if i don’t figure this out before next week then this may be something to look at during the workshop.

    i’ve also confirmed that it definitely doesn’t work in 2.6. it does work in 2.5.4 in both windows 7 and XP. need to check whether it works on other OSs; this would be good to do in workshop.

    i’ll have some wtv and mp4 files for people to play around with. (ironically the only mp4s i’ve found so far that work are porn, so if i give you porn files it’s not a political statement.)
